Our First Stop: Mauritius – A Home Away from Home 🇲🇺🏝️
Our world trip began in Mauritius – and it was more than just a travel destination, it became our home for almost 2.5 months. Instead of simply exploring, we experienced the island in a very special way.
🐢🐶 A House Full of Life
Our beautiful house was not just a retreat, but a little paradise. With two curious land tortoises (Yoga & Yogi) in the garden and three loyal dogs (Rose, Willi & Romeo) who accompanied us every day, it felt like we weren’t just visitors – we were part of it all.
But it wasn’t just the animal roommates that made our stay so special. Vimen, who looked after the house, quickly became more than a caretaker – he became a friend. With his calm and warm-hearted nature, he was always there when we needed anything, and we deeply appreciated his presence. He welcomed us as family and shared his world with us – a world full of kindness, traditions, and deep respect for one another.
💛 Friendships That Last
Mauritius showed us that traveling doesn’t just mean seeing new places, but also meeting new people. A particularly special connection formed with Monique, our cook, who not only spoiled us with delicious Mauritian dishes but also welcomed us into her life. She invited us into her home, and suddenly we were no longer just travelers – we were part of her family. The warmth and openness with which we were received were overwhelming.
Vimen also shared his life with us. He took us to his temple, proudly showing us the rituals and traditions that are important to him. It was an honor to be allowed into that world.
🏍️✨ Through the Streets with Vimen
A special memory I carry with me is a ride with Vimen on his motorbike through the neighborhoods. He was so proud to introduce me to his friends, and I could tell how much it meant to him to welcome us as a family. It wasn’t just a simple outing – it was a moment of real connection.
We wanted to give something back to him and his family, so we supported them financially to help ease their lives a little. It felt only natural to us, because he had given us so much – not in material things, but through his warmth, his stories, and his unconditional hospitality.

💍🎊 A Wedding from Another World
An unforgettable experience was being invited to a Hindu wedding. We got to witness firsthand how deeply rooted the traditions are in Mauritius. For the first time, we wore traditional clothing – the women in beautiful, intricate saris and I in a festive kurta. At first it all felt unfamiliar, but we quickly realized that it’s moments like these that make traveling truly unique.
The colors, the rituals, the hospitality – it was a magical celebration that gave us deep insight into the island’s culture. The way we were welcomed touched us deeply and reminded us once again that there are open-hearted people everywhere in the world.
🐋🌊 An Unforgettable Moment: Our First Whale!
Mauritius had many surprises in store for us – but one of the most spectacular was seeing our first whale! It was an absolutely magical moment to witness this giant sea creature in the wild. The elegance with which it moved through the water was breathtaking. It was an experience that moved us deeply and reminded us of the wonder and greatness of nature.

🚓💸 The Most Exciting Police Stop of Our Lives
A less idyllic but still memorable experience in Mauritius was our encounter with the police. We were stopped for speeding – a moment that at first seemed like it would be an expensive affair. The fine would have been the equivalent of around 100 euros. But then came something that apparently is quite normal on the island: a discreet offer to “solve the problem quickly.” For just 6 euros, the matter was settled – no ticket, no discussion. An unusual and somewhat bizarre experience that showed us how differently things can work in some parts of the world.
✨🌊 Mauritius – More Than Just a Beginning
Mauritius was the perfect first stop on our world journey. We arrived as travelers, but we left as friends. The encounters, the experiences, and the warmth of the people made this time unforgettable.
Mauritius wasn’t just an island in the Indian Ocean – it was our first home on our journey to freedom.
